What is the 10 Hz frequency?

Research suggests that alpha-range frequencies (8-12 Hz) are associated with relaxed, calm mental states. Studies on sound and music interventions show effects on mood and emotional regulation. A peer-reviewed study found that music listening significantly reduced cortisol and improved mood markers in participants.

Mechanism of Action

Associated with alpha brainwave states linked to calm alertness; may support emotional balance through relaxation pathways

Documented benefits

Research and clinical observation have identified the following effects when listening to 10 Hz at appropriate volume levels with quality headphones for 30+ minutes per session:

Enhanced emotional balance
Improved mood and calm
Reduced tension
Greater sense of wellbeing
Support for emotional stability
Gentle relaxation

Who is this for?

The science behind 10 Hz

Brainwave entrainment — the process by which the brain synchronizes its electrical activity to an external stimulus — is one of the most well-documented phenomena in auditory neuroscience. When you listen to 10 Hz, your brain's neural oscillations begin to match that frequency through the Frequency Following Response (FFR).

This isn't speculation. The FFR has been measured with EEG since the 1970s and is consistently replicated across clinical settings. What varies between frequencies is which neural circuits are most affected — and that's where the specificity of 10 Hz matters.

How to use Serotonin Balance

Recommended Dosage

25-35 minutes daily, preferably at a consistent time for routine building. Individual experiences may vary

🎧

Use headphones

Over-ear for best entrainment. The frequency must reach both ears directly.

🧘

Find a quiet space

External noise competes with the frequency. A calm environment amplifies the effect.

📅

Be consistent

Daily use for 2+ weeks produces measurable results. Your brain adapts and responds faster over time.

Safety information

Frequency therapy is generally considered safe for most adults. However, certain conditions require caution. Consult a healthcare professional before use if any of the following apply:

  • Consult your healthcare provider if you are at risk of serotonin syndrome
  • Consult your healthcare provider if you take MAOI medications
  • Consult your healthcare provider if you have recently changed SSRI medications
  • This is a wellness tool, not a medical device

This information is for educational purposes only. Freqium is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

When Science Listens to Sound

Dr. Tamara Goldsby

Researcher, Department of Family Medicine · University of California San Diego

After just one sound meditation session, participants showed significant reductions in tension, anxiety, fatigue, and depressed mood. The effects were immediate and measurable.

In 2017, researchers at UC San Diego conducted one of the largest studies on sound therapy to date. Dr. Tamara Goldsby recruited 62 participants and measured their physical and emotional state before and after a single one-hour sound meditation using Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls, gongs, and bells — instruments that generate specific therapeutic frequencies.

The results, published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine, showed statistically significant reductions across every measure: tension dropped, anger decreased, anxiety fell, fatigue diminished, and depressed mood lifted. All from a single session.

What made the study particularly compelling was that participants who had never tried sound therapy before experienced the LARGEST improvements — suggesting that the body responds to therapeutic frequencies regardless of belief or prior experience.

The paper concluded that sound meditation represents a low-cost, accessible intervention with significant effects on mood and well-being. It was a turning point in legitimizing frequency therapy within mainstream medical research.
